finally it was race day for our masters 8+. I row for the Pocock Rowing Center and we got 2nd to Lake Washington Rowing Club by 5 seconds. that’s about a 1/2 boat length of open water between their stern and our bow.

we had some errors - coxswain got off count in our first 20 strokes, at 20 we should have called a “settle” reducing the rate 4 beats for a mid-high 10 strokes then another settle down 4 beats to our base rate. our coxswain miscounted and our first 20 was 2 strokes long - some of the boat stayed on for 2 extra strokes following her commands but some followed what the count should have been. there was just a blip of confusion that put the rhythm off for 5 strokes or so. not a huge deal but since we don’t have a great start it put us that much farther behind. at about 700m in we hit a race bouy on the starboard side, slowed the boat, screwed up the steering which put us at risk of hitting another buoy. another blip of confusion. after this we buckled down and got back on the race plan and kept our heads in the boat. over the course of the race we rowed back from 4th place to 2nd but couldn’t catch 1st.

without our mistakes i don’t think we would have won, but it could have been closer. considering some of the bad rows we’ve had over the weeks, we were happy to keep it together as well as we did. there were some of us in the boat who have a lot of race experience and some who have very little and we proved we could pull together when we needed to. our coxswain who is just a sophmore in high school could have completely unravelled but she hung tough and showed that she has a ton of potential.

so now i get to go back to my single for a while. the women in my club are awesome and i know we’ll get together to row team boats again after a little break.
